Abstract
This study aims to analyze the realization of rhetorical appeals—Logos, Pathos, and Ethos—in the presidential inauguration speeches of Prabowo Subianto and Joko Widodo, with the objective of understanding how each leader constructs persuasive political discourse. The research adopts a qualitative approach using document analysis as the primary method. Specifically, the speeches were examined through content analysis grounded in Aristotelian rhetoric to identify and classify the presence and frequency of the three persuasive appeals. The results of the analysis, visualized through a bar chart, show a clear contrast between the two leaders in terms of rhetorical strategy. Prabowo Subianto demonstrates a more intensive use of rhetorical appeals, with 9 instances of Logos, 8 of Pathos, and 8 of Ethos. His speech reflects a balanced but rhetorically dense style, emphasizing logical reasoning, emotional connection, and personal credibility. This indicates a strategic use of persuasive elements to establish authority and inspire trust in his leadership. In contrast, Joko Widodo presents a more reserved rhetorical approach, using each appeal—Logos, Pathos, and Ethos—five times. The uniformity of his rhetorical distribution suggests a preference for concise and measured communication, aligning with his typically modest and down-to-earth political persona. The most significant difference is seen in the use of Logos, where Prabowo outpaces Jokowi by four points. This finding highlights Prabowo's stronger reliance on logical argumentation and structured reasoning. Overall, Prabowo’s speech can be described as rhetorically rich and assertive, while Jokowi’s speech is characterized by balance and simplicity. These findings contribute to the broader understanding of rhetorical practices in Indonesian political discourse and demonstrate how rhetorical appeals can reflect a leader’s communication style and strategic positioning.
