Abstract

Cananga odorata is a plant that produces essential oil containing monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, and phenylpropanoids. The essential oil and extracts from ylang-ylang flowers exhibit various bioactivities, including antimicrobial, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and others. The research was conducted using the microwave hydrodiffusion and gravity (MHG) method, which offers several advantages such as solvent-free processing, short extraction time, and low energy consumption. This study was designed to investigate the effect of the F/D ratio on the yield of ylang-ylang essential oil under various material conditions and forms, as well as to compare the essential oil yields obtained using the Soxhlet and MHG methods. The dependent variable observed in this study was the yield of essential oil, while the independent variables included variations in material mass of 50 g, 100 g, 150 g, and 200 g; differences in material form (whole, half, and chopped); and material conditions categorized as fresh (without drying) and dried (with drying for 3–4 days). The control variable applied was the distiller volume, which was kept constant at 1000 mL The results of the study indicate that the effect of the F/D ratio on the yield of essential oil from fresh ylang-ylang flowers in various material forms tends to increase; the greater the mass of the material, the higher the yield of essential oil obtained. Fresh whole ylang-ylang flowers provided the optimum yield of 0.74%. The influence of the F/D ratio on the essential oil yield of ylang-ylang under different material conditions shows that fresh materials produce oil that meets the Indonesian National Standard (SNI), characterized by a yellow color and the distinctive aroma of ylang-ylang. Under non-dried conditions, the yield obtained was 0.74%, while under dried material conditions it reached 1,98%. The higher yield in dried materials is attributed to the reduction of internal water content in the flowers, which triggers carbonation. A comparison between the MHG and Soxhlet methods shows that the yield of ylang-ylang essential oil is higher with the MHG method (0.64%) compared to the Soxhlet method (0.51%). The most optimal material form for extraction in both methods is fresh whole ylang-ylang flowers (without drying). Keywords: Cananga odorata, distiller, essential oil, feed ratio, MHG, yield.
