Abstract
The phenomenon of Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) refers to feelings of anxiety or fear of being left out, which are often experienced by adolescents due to the urge to stay connected with social activities, especially through social media such as TikTok and Instagram. This condition affects how students perceive and evaluate themselves, known as self image. This study aims to explore the impact of FOMO on the formation of students’ self-image. This research employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. The subjects are students of SMP Negeri 2 Balerejo who are active social media users and show symptoms of FOMO. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations, and analyzed using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing techniques. The findings reveal that students’ self image is shaped by a combination of personal perceptions and social responses, particularly those obtained through social media. FOMO arises from the intensity of social media use, peer pressure, and emotional needs for social acceptance. It has a negative impact on the formation of self image, as students tend to shape their self-concept based on trends and external validation rather than authentic self-understanding. These findings contribute to guidance and counseling services, particularly in developing preventive programs against FOMO tendencies. School counselors can use these results as a reference in designing individual and group counseling strategies to help students build a positive and healthy self-image amid digital social pressures
