Abstract
Dandruff is a common condition caused by disturbances of the scalp, such as excessive sebum secretion, stress, and the growth of microorganisms, including Candida albicans. The use of synthetic chemical-based shampoos such as selenium disulfide often leads to side effects, including scalp irritation. Therefore, the development of natural alternatives is important. One plant with potential as an anti-dandruff agent is White Frangipani (Plumeria alba L.), which is known to contain active compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and alkaloids with antifungal properties. This study aimed to formulate an anti-dandruff shampoo from a combination of leaf and flower extracts of White Frangipani (Plumeria alba L.) and to evaluate its antifungal activity against Candida albicans in vitro. This research was an experimental laboratory study using a post-test only control group design. The simplicia of White Frangipani leaves and flowers were extracted by remaceration using 96% ethanol, then formulated into three types of shampoos with extract concentration variations of 10% (F1), 15% (F2), and 20% (F3). The shampoo formulations were tested for physical characteristics (organoleptic properties, pH, viscosity, spreadability, foam height, and stability), as well as antifungal activity using the disc diffusion method against Candida albicans. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, followed by ANOVA and post hoc tests. The results showed that all formulations met the physical characteristics requirements according to SNI:1992 and exhibited antifungal activity, with the largest inhibition zone demonstrated by formula F3. Statistical analysis showed significant differences among the formulations (p<0.05), indicating that increasing extract concentration enhanced antifungal effectiveness. Formula F3 was identified as the best formulation in this study.
