Abstract
Self-identity is one aspect of adolescent development that reflects how individuals understand themselves, the values they believe in, and the roles they play in the social environment. One of the factors that influence the formation of self-identity is birth order, because each position in the family brings different experiences and treatment. The purpose of this study is to determine the understanding of self-identity in adolescents based on birth order, namely as the firstborn, middle, youngest, and only child. This type of research uses qualitative research with phenomenological studies. Subjects amounted to 4 adolescents, selected using purposive sampling technique based on several criteria, namely, adolescents aged 12-18 years, and representing each birth position in the family. Data collection techniques using observation and unstructured interviews, in data analysis using the Miles and Huberman model includes data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Based on the research findings, firstborns tend to be independent and responsible. The middle child shows hesitation in making decisions. Youngest children seem to follow the values they believe in without much consideration, and still show dependence on parents. Meanwhile, only children begin to explore themselves, but still need emotional support from the surrounding environment.
