Abstract
Self-harm is a behavior of intentionally inflicting physical injury on oneself, such as cutting the skin with sharp objects, to experience physical pain as a mechanism for releasing emotions. This behavior is carried out without suicidal intent or motivation, typically occurring during periods of psychological and emotional instability. Self-harm was found among adolescents who are members of a Christian community actively involved in church and spiritual activities. This study aims to identify the forms of self-harm, the contributing factors, and the impacts of such behavior. The results indicate that the forms of self-harm include cutting the hands and banging the head against a wall, causing physical wounds without severe infection. In addition, self-harm affects the individual’s social life, leading to reluctance in building close relationships with others and a tendency to withdraw. This research employed a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, conducted at Gereja Sidang Jemaat Air Hidup in Madiun City, with one main subject. Data were collected using time triangulation over three sessions through interviews, enabling validation and descriptive presentation of the subject’s statements. The findings may serve as a reference for future studies on similar topics or provide useful insights for readers.
