Abstract
Individuals with visual impairments face significant challenges in performing daily activities such as walking, eating, and working. In such conditions, they rely heavily on other senses, such as hearing and touch. Typically, a cane is used as a navigation aid. However, traditional canes have limitations, particularly in detecting obstacles beyond their reach. This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) method with the aim of designing and testing the effectiveness of a navigation aid in the form of a warning hat for the visually impaired. The prototype utilizes two ultrasonic sensors mounted on the left and right sides of the hat. Test results indicate that the system can effectively detect objects at five distance levels: 25 cm, 50 cm, 100 cm, 150 cm, and 175 cm. The strength of this system lies in its ability to detect obstacles from both the front and sides simultaneously and provide responsive alerts. Overall, the development of this assistive device was successfully realized and functions as intended, particularly in detecting obstacles at predefined distances.
