Abstract
The phenomenon of adolescents dropping out of school is a serious problem that has long-term impacts on the quality of human resources, both from psychological, social, and economic aspects. Although the government has launched a 12-year compulsory education program, in reality, many adolescents still drop out of school for various complex and interrelated reasons. This condition requires special attention, especially in rural areas that have limitations in terms of access, economics, and social support. This study aims to uncover the factors causing adolescents to drop out of school and the impacts it has on their lives in Gerih Village, Ngawi Regency. Using a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method, the validity of the data used is method triangulation and involves an external auditor to ensure data validity through interviews, observations, field notes, and consultations with supervisors. This study involved three informants who dropped out of school at the high school/vocational high school level. The results show that internal factors such as low motivation and interest in learning, laziness, and lack of enthusiasm play a significant role in the decision to drop out of school. Meanwhile, external factors include the family's worrying economic conditions, pregnancy outside of marriage, lack of parental supervision, and limited access to transportation. The impacts experienced by adolescents after dropping out of school include decreased self-confidence, difficulty finding employment, feelings of regret, and the emergence of social stigma. These findings are expected to provide important input for parents, schools, and communities in preventing and developing more effective support strategies for adolescents.
