Abstract

This research-based e-monograph focuses on the biodegradation of chlorpyrifos pesticides by indigenous fungi as a learning resource for university students. This study aimed to examine the capability of indigenous fungal isolates to degrade chlorpyrifos residues. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, encompassing morphological characterization (macroscopic and microscopic), in vitro inhibition tests by measuring fungal mycelial growth on PDA media, and biodegradation analysis using UV-Vis spectrophotometry to measure Optical Density (OD) on Mineral Salt Medium (MSM). The identification results revealed that fungi from the genera Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus niger have the potential to degrade chlorpyrifos. Both isolates remained viable at high concentrations (25,000 ppm), with inhibition rates of 68.61% for A. flavus and 65.45% for A. niger, respectively. In the biodegradation test, the OD values increased on day 3. At 25,000 ppm concentration, the specific growth rate (μ) for A. flavus was −0.043, while that for A. niger was −0.014. Validation by two expert validators resulted in a feasibility score of 92.2%, which was categorized as very valid and suitable for use without revision. This e-monograph is expected to serve as an alternative learning medium based on local wisdom, effectively supporting biotechnology education and raising environmental literacy and awareness of pesticide impacts.
