Abstract
This research aims to describe and analyze the role of the cadet program in developing student participation in both academic and non-academic student organizations. This study links the cadet program sponsored by the church with Citizenship Education, while also identifying factors of the cadet program that can influence alumni in student organization activities. The socio-political challenges leading up to the 2019 elections and the Ngagel bombing at three churches in Surabaya faced by the community, especially the Catholic youth, provide the background for this research. This program is designed to produce a generation of young individuals who are character-driven, skilled, and possess leadership qualities that align with the church, so that they are prepared to face broad social challenges and capable of becoming agents of change in society. The cadet program is facilitated by the church to shape a generation of young people who are character-driven, skilled, and visionary. This research uses a descriptive qualitative research type of case study with the socio-cultural domain of Citizenship Education as the basis for analysis, which has not been highlighted regarding how the church facilitates the youth in the formation of citizenship character that includes intellectual skills and participation. Data analysis employs triangulation techniques, comparing the results of interviews, observations, and documentation from various sources to ensure accuracy and consistency. The research results indicate that this cadre program can serve as a platform for life learning, fostering self-confidence, creativity, critical thinking, and responsibility. In addition, this study found a correlation with the socio-cultural domain of citizenship education where this cadet training also instills civic knowledge, skills, dispositions such as communication, leadership, and integrity in their role as active or passive participants both in academic and non-academic settings. Factors supporting the success of the program include full support from the church, involvement of competent facilitators, and an inclusive and adaptive organizational environment. Overall, this research recommends that this cadre program continues to be developed as an effort to build a character-driven youth ready to contribute to the wider community. These findings are expected to serve as a reference for educational institutions, churches, and student organizations in designing sustainable development programs that meet the needs of the youth each year.
