Abstract

Writing skills are essential in various fields of English, enabling individuals to communicate effectively and persuade others persuasively. In learning to write, there are difficulties experienced by students at the vocational high school, including: (1) Limited vocabulary, (2) Low understanding of grammar, (3) Low interest in learning to write in English, (4) Lack of understand the genre-based text, including the generic structures and language features, (5) Students’ inactivity, (6) Learning still uses conventional methods. The purpose of the study is to determine whether students taught using the Snowball Throwing Technique, incorporating Picture Series Media, have better writing skills than students taught by the conventional writing technique. The research method employed by the researcher is quantitative, utilising a quasi-experimental design. The sample in this study was the tenth-grade class of DKV-2 and DKV-3 students at SMK Negeri 2 Jiwan. The results show that Snowball Throwing Technique incorporating Picture Series Media, positively affected students’ writing ability. This is evidenced by the average value of the post-test in the experimental class and control class is 88.13 and 68.37. The significance value (Sig. (2-tailed)) is (.000 < .05), which means the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted and the Null Hypothesis (H0) is rejected. Snowball Throwing Technique incorporating Picture Series Media can significantly affect students’ performance in content, organization, vocabulary, and mechanics, helping them enjoy and become more interested, active in teamwork, and enthusiastic about participating in learning. This approach also helps train students’ motor skills in vocabulary acquisition and class activities, thereby attracting their interest in learning. The writing skills of students in the experimental class who have been given treatment using Snowball Throwing Technique incorporating Picture Series Media are better than the control class, taught using a conventional technique.
