Abstract

Rice (Oryza sativa) is a major food commodity in Indonesia and plays a vital role in maintaining national food security. However, rice productivity is often disrupted by pests and diseases, especially in agricultural areas such as Madiun City. Limited access to agricultural experts and farmers' limited knowledge in recognizing disease symptoms are major obstacles to the process of rapid and accurate disease identification and control. To address these issues, this study developed a web-based expert system capable of diagnosing rice plant pests and diseases based on observed symptoms. This system was built using the forward chaining method, which works by matching user input symptoms against a rule base to generate diagnostic conclusions. The system was designed using the CodeIgniter 4 framework and implemented on a web platform accessible through various devices. Test results showed that the system is capable of providing rapid and accurate diagnoses and treatment recommendations, thus expected to assist farmers in independent decision-making. Thus, this system is an effective digital solution to support increased rice farming productivity at the local level.
