Abstract

Technological development is currently experiencing significant progress across various fields. This advancement is driven by the strong wave of globalization and the increasing use of technology, which has become an integral part of daily life. These conditions have encouraged various parties to innovate in the field of information and communication technology. One of the emerging innovations today is the Internet of Things (IoT). However, the presence of such technologies has not yet fully addressed environmental issues, one of which is the problem of waste. Each year, waste accumulation increases significantly due to the lack of public awareness regarding proper waste management. Moreover, the limited availability of waste collection centers or recycling banks exacerbates the issue. To address this problem, the researcher developed the Smart Waste Exchange system, which facilitates the exchange of plastic bottles for incentives. This system consists of two components, a software component in the form of a website for managing waste data, and a hardware component in the form of a smart trash bin integrated with Internet of Things (IoT) technology. The development of the Smart Waste Exchange system uses the Prototype Method, along with the Unified Modeling Language (UML) design model. Testing results indicate that the system can serve as a solution to help reduce waste accumulation—particularly plastic bottle waste—while also increasing public awareness of the importance of proper waste management through the use of technology.
