Abstract

Listening is a foundational skill in English language learning, supporting the development of speaking, reading, and writing. Despite its importance, listening is often underemphasized in junior high school classrooms due to limited engaging media and lack of technological integration. Digital learning applications like Duolingo offer potential to address this gap by enhancing listening instruction through interactive and gamified experiences. This study explores the implementation of Duolingo to teach listening skills to eighth-grade students at MTsN 3 Magetan. Using a descriptive qualitative research design, data were gathered through observations, interviews, and documentation involving one English teacher and 31 students. The analysis employed Miles and Huberman’s model of data condensation, display, and conclusion drawing, with triangulation ensuring data validity. The implementation aligned with the school’s lesson structure, consisting of pre-activity (motivation and contextualization), main activity (guided listening via Duolingo podcasts), and post-activity (reflection and feedback). Results indicated that Duolingo increased student engagement, provided authentic listening content, and encouraged classroom interaction. Its strengths included gamified features, interactive exercises, and user-friendly design, which boosted motivation and learning interest. However, challenges included misalignment with the national curriculum, dependency on reliable internet access, and student struggles with fast-paced or accented speech. Overall, Duolingo proved to be an effective supplementary tool for enhancing English listening skills when supported by teacher facilitation and curriculum alignment. While not ideal as a standalone method, it enriches listening instruction and promotes active learning. Future research is recommended to explore its integration into other language skills and educational settings.
