Abstract
Indonesian is a compulsory subject taught in schools. It not only teaches language but also teaches listening skills from the intrinsic elements of stories. Some students find the intrinsic elements of stories less engaging, leading to their inactivity. This study aims to determine the effect of the inquiry method assisted by audio-visual media on the listening skills of fourth-grade students at Kauman Elementary School. This study used two classes: a fourth-grade class at Kauman Elementary School as the experimental class and a fourth-grade class at Manisrejo Elementary School as the control class. This study employed a quantitative experimental research method with a True Experimental Design and a pretest/posttest control group design. The subjects of this study were 15 fourth-grade students at Kauman Elementary School (the experimental class) and 15 fourth-grade students at Manisrejo Elementary School (the control class). Data collection techniques used observation to obtain initial data, documentation guidelines to strengthen the data, and test question sheets as instruments to measure student learning outcomes. Data analysis was carried out through normality tests, homogeneity tests, and t-tests to determine significant differences between the two groups. The results showed that the pretest before treatment using the inquiry method assisted by audio-visual media obtained an average test score of 53.47. The posttest conducted after the treatment showed an average test score of 85.80. The increased average score indicates that there is an effect of the inquiry method assisted by audio-visual media on listening skills. The t-test results showed a significant value of 24.185 t_table > 1.761, indicating a significant difference between the experimental and control classes. Thus, the inquiry method assisted by audio-visual media can be an alternative, effective learning strategy in improving students' listening skills in elementary schools.
