Abstract
Reading comprehension skills are an important aspect that students must possess to fully understand the content of a text. The issues observed at SDN Ngadirejo 02 indicate that students' reading comprehension skills in Phase C are still low, particularly in understanding narrative texts. This study aims to investigate the effect of the PQRST method on students' reading comprehension skills. This is a quantitative study using a pretest-posttest control group design. The research subjects were 34 fifth-grade students at SDN Ngadirejo 02, divided into two groups: an experimental group and a control group. Data collection techniques used a descriptive test consisting of six items for the pretest and posttest. Data analysis techniques used normality tests, homogeneity tests, and t-tests (independent sample t-tests) through the SPSS 25 program. The results of the study indicate that there is a difference in the reading comprehension test results between the experimental class using the PQRST method and the control class using the Reciprocal Teaching method, thus showing a significant effect of the PQRST method on students' reading comprehension skills. This is because the use of the PQRST method allows students to better understand the reading text. This is demonstrated by the higher average post-test scores of the experimental class compared to the control class, with scores of 88.76 (experimental) and 75.94 (control). The results of the pre-test normality test for the experimental class yielded a Sig. value of 0.270 > 0.05, and for the control class, 0.495 > 0.05. Meanwhile, the post-test results for the experimental class showed 0.069 > 0.05 and for the control class 0.224 > 0.05, indicating that the data were normally distributed. The homogeneity test results showed a Sig. value of 0.05 ≥ 0.05, indicating that the data were homogeneous. The t-test results showed a Sig. value (2-tailed) < 0.05, and t-count (3.15) > t-table (0.433). Thus, the PQRST method is effective in improving students' reading comprehension skills in narrative texts.
