Abstract
Riengga Hanafi Putra Wiratama. 2026. Design and Development of an IoT-Based Smart Glove as a Sign Language Translator into Voice Output on an Android Application. Undergraduate Thesis. Informatics Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas PGRI Madiun. Advisors: (I) Yessi Yunita Sari, S.Kom., M.Cs. (II) Muh. Nur Luthfi Azis, S.Kom., M.Kom. Deaf-mute individuals often experience communication barriers with the general public due to the public's limited understanding of sign language, while existing solutions such as sign language interpreters and camera-based translator applications are considered impractical and highly dependent on specific environmental conditions. This study aims to design, build, and test an Internet of Things (IoT)-based Smart Glove as a medium for translating the A-to-Z sign language alphabet into text and voice output on an Android application. The system was developed using an ESP32 microcontroller integrated with five flex sensors to detect finger bending and an MPU-6050 sensor to detect hand orientation. Gesture data is classified using a threshold method and transmitted wirelessly via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to an Android application developed using Android Studio with the Kotlin programming language, producing text and voice output through a Text-to-Speech feature. The system development method used was the V-Model, which pairs each design stage with a corresponding testing stage through unit testing, integration testing, and system testing. System testing was carried out using accuracy testing and Black Box Testing methods. The test results show that the system was able to recognize the A-to-Z letter gestures with an average accuracy of 92.7%, with letters having clear finger configurations such as A, B, D, and E achieving 100% accuracy, while letters J, M, and N obtained the lowest accuracy of 80% due to gesture similarity. Black Box Testing results for 13 functional scenarios showed a system success rate of 92.31%, categorized as "Very Feasible". Thus, the developed IoT-based Smart Glove is proven capable of helping deaf-mute individuals communicate more independently and effectively with the general public.
