Abstract

TITON PRAMUDYA. 2026. Poetry Writing Skills of Grade V Students on Diction and Figurative Language Materials through Deep Learning Approach (A Case Study at SD Negeri 3 Kendalrejo, Kabupaten Trenggalek). Thesis. Master’s Program in Indonesian Language and Literature Education. Graduate School, Universitas PGRI Madiun (UNIPMA). Supervisor I: Dr. Dwi Setyadi, M.M, Supervisor II: Dr. Dwi Rohman Soleh, S.S., M.Pd Keywords: poetry writing skills, diction, figurative language, deep learning, case study. This research is motivated by the low poetry writing skills of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 3 Kendalrejo, Kabupaten Trenggalek, as shown by difficulties in choosing appropriate diction and using figurative language effectively to enhance their works. The objective is to describe students' poetry writing skills on diction and figurative language materials through the deep learning approach and to analyze the learning process. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design. The subjects were fifth grade students and teachers. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis of students' poetry works, then analyzed interactively using the Miles and Huberman model. The findings reveal that the deep learning approach encourages students to explore word meanings deeply, connect diction with concrete experiences, and understand figurative language functions through observation and reflection. Students showed improved ability in choosing precise words and using comparative figures of speech, personification, and hyperbole more variedly in their poems. The learning process involving exploration, discussion, and gradual creation also enhanced students' creativity and confidence. In conclusion, the deep learning approach is effective in developing poetry writing skills on diction and figurative language materials and is worthy as a meaningful alternative for literature learning in elementary schools.
