Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the active learning model with student facilitators in improving the speaking skills of third-grade students at SD Negeri Jombok 1, Ngoro District, Jombang Regency. This study also aims to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the implementation of the active learning model with student facilitators in improving students’ speaking skills. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed descriptively by examining the learning process and students’ speaking skills during the implementation of the learning model. The results showed that the active learning model with student facilitators could improve the speaking skills of third-grade students. Improvements were observed in the planning, implementation, and evaluation stages. The learning process in cycle II was more effective and produced better learning outcomes than in cycle I. Students showed greater enthusiasm and motivation to participate actively in learning activities. They also demonstrated increased courage and confidence in speaking and expressing their opinions. The students’ overall average score increased from 70.3 in cycle I to 87.76 in cycle II, representing an increase of 17.46%. All assessment aspects, which were categorized as moderate in cycle I, improved to the very high category in cycle II.The strengths of the active learning model with student facilitators included creating a conducive learning atmosphere, increasing students’ enthusiasm and motivation, and encouraging cooperation among students in groups, which contributed to improved learning outcomes. However, the model also had a weakness, namely that some student facilitators tended to dominate their groups. Therefore, teachers need to provide closer supervision and ensure that each student facilitator performs their assigned responsibilities appropriately.
