Abstract
This research is motivated by the low understanding of contextual vocabulary among elementary school students, particularly in relating word meanings to their usage in context. Learning that focuses mainly on memorization makes it difficult for students to understand and use vocabulary appropriately in daily life. Therefore, an engaging and contextual learning method is needed, one of which is the implementation of the Picture and Picture method combined with interactive illustrated stories. The objective of this study is to improve students’ contextual vocabulary understanding and to describe the process and outcomes of implementing the Picture and Picture method and interactive illustrated stories. This study employs a qualitative approach with a classroom action research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles. The subjects were third-grade students of SD Negeri 1 Kerjo, Kabupaten Trenggalek. Data were collected through observation, interviews, vocabulary comprehension tests, and documentation. The data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative techniques with the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The findings indicate that the implementation of the Picture and Picture method combined with interactive illustrated stories significantly improves students’ contextual vocabulary understanding. Students are better able to understand word meanings through visualizations and story contexts, and can use vocabulary appropriately in simple sentences. In addition, students show high enthusiasm as the learning process is engaging and interactive. In conclusion, the Picture and Picture method combined with interactive illustrated stories is effective in improving contextual vocabulary understanding of third-grade students at SD Negeri 1 Kerjo, Kabupaten Trenggalek.
