Dian Lestari. 2026. Improving Speaking Skills Through YouTube-Based Local Tradition Documentary Videos for Fifth-Grade Students of SD Negeri 2 Tanggaran, Kabupaten Trenggalek. Thesis. Master’s Program in Indonesian Language and Literature Education. Graduate School, Universitas PGRI Madiun (UNIPMA). Supervisor I: Dr. Dwi Setiyadi, M.M, Supervisor II: Dr. Dwi Rohman Soleh, S.S., M.Pd. Keywords: Speaking Skills, Documentary Videos, Local Traditions, YouTube, Elementary School. This research is motivated by the low speaking skills of elementary school students in expressing ideas and opinions orally. Conventional teaching methods tend to limit students’ confidence and opportunities to practice communication. The use of YouTube-based local tradition documentary videos is expected to serve as an engaging and contextual learning medium. The objective of this study is to improve students’ speaking skills through the use of YouTube-based documentary videos on local traditions and to describe the process and outcomes of the improvement. This study employs a qualitative approach with a classroom action research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles. The subjects were fifth-grade students of SD Negeri 2 Tanggaran, Kabupaten Trenggalek. Data were collected through observation, interviews, speaking tests, and documentation. The data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative techniques with the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The findings indicate that the use of YouTube-based local tradition documentary videos significantly improves students’ speaking skills. Students become more confident, are able to express their ideas more systematically, and use more varied vocabulary. In addition, students show high enthusiasm as the learning materials are closely related to their local cultural context. In conclusion, YouTube-based documentary videos on local traditions are effective in improving speaking skills of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 2 Tanggaran, Kabupaten Trenggalek.
