Suwito. 2026. Improving Reading Comprehension Ability Through Folktale Based Deep Learning Model in Fifth-Grade Students of SD Negeri Bangunasri, Kabupaten Magetan. Thesis. Master’s Program in Indonesian Language and Literature Education. Graduate School, Universitas PGRI Madiun (UNIPMA). Supervisor I: Dr. Dwi Setiyadi, M.M., Supervisor II: Dr. Dwi Rohman Soleh, S.S., M.Pd. Keywords: Reading Comprehension Ability, Deep Learning, Magetan Folktales, Classroom Action Research, Elementary School. This research is motivated by the low reading comprehension ability of fifthgrade students at SD Negeri Bangunasri, Kabupaten Magetan, as shown by difficulties in grasping main ideas, making inferences, and understanding implicit meanings in texts. The objective is to improve reading comprehension ability through a folktale-based deep learning model. This Classroom Action Research was conducted in two cycles consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The subjects were fifth-grade students. Data were collected through reading comprehension tests, observation sheets on student activities, and field notes, then analyzed using descriptive quantitative and qualitative methods. The findings indicate that students' reading comprehension ability improved meaningfully after the implementation of the Magetan folktale-based deep learning model. The use of local folktales as teaching materials increased student engagement, facilitated understanding of cultural contexts, and strengthened connections between texts and their experiences. The learning process emphasizing deep understanding, reflective discussions, and collaborative exploration of textual meaning proved capable of improving students' ability to determine main ideas, answer inferential questions, and interpret information critically. The achievement of performance indicators by the end of the cycles exceeded the established minimum mastery criteria. In conclusion, the Magetan folktale-based deep learning model is effective and can serve as an innovative approach for improving reading comprehension ability in elementary schools.
