Abstract
Father absence refers to a condition where a father does not optimally fulfill his role, either physically or emotionally, thereby potentially influencing psychological development, including emotion regulation, in daughters. This study aims to identify the forms of father absence in a daughter's life, analyze the factors influencing emotion regulation in daughters experiencing father absence, and describe the impact of father absence on emotion regulation through the lens of the Electra Complex. The study employs a qualitative approach using a case study method and was conducted in Sukolilo Village, Jiwan District, Madiun Regency. The research subject is a young adult woman who experienced father absence due to parental separation. Data collection involved three semi-structured, in-depth interviews conducted at different times, utilizing time triangulation to verify data validity. Data analysis proceeded through the stages of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that father absence is perceived as the loss of the father's function in providing attention, protection, emotional support, communication, and involvement in the child's life, even though the father remains biologically alive. The subject's emotion regulation is influenced by the ability to recognize her own emotions, independently developed coping mechanisms, social support from peers, and the process of accepting her family situation. The subject tends to initially suppress her emotions and subsequently seeks support through close friends and activities that provide a sense of comfort as an emotion regulation strategy. From the perspective of the Electra complex, a father's absence gives rise to a longing for the father figure and emotional ambivalence characterized by a mix of yearning and disappointment while also influencing how the subject forms interpersonal relationships. Nevertheless, the subject demonstrates the ability to adapt and gradually develop emotional regulation through life experiences and environmental support.
