Abstract

This study aims to explore the implementation of Genre-Based Approach combined with Picture media media in teaching descriptive writing to the tenth-grade students of SMAN 1 Barat. Writing is one of the essential language skills in EFL learning, yet students often encounter difficulties in generating ideas, organizing content, mastering vocabulary, applying grammar, and developing confidence in writing English texts. This study employed a qualitative research approach, using observation, interviews, and documentation as data collection methods. The findings indicate that the implementation of Genre-Based Approach through the stages of Building Knowledge of the Field, Modeling of the Text, Joint Construction of the Text, and Independent Construction of the Text provides systematic guidance that supports students in developing their writing skills. Picture media media effectively stimulate students’ imagination, facilitate idea generation, enrich vocabulary, and increase students’ motivation during the learning process. Despite several challenges, such as limited vocabulary mastery, grammatical errors, and students’ lack of confidence in expressing ideas in written form, the teacher’s guidance, feedback, and vocabulary support contributed positively to overcoming these difficulties. The study concludes that integrating Genre-Based Approach with Picture media media is an effective strategy to support EFL students in improving descriptive writing skills and enhancing their participation and engagement in the classroom learning process.
