Abstract

This study analyzes Prince Henry’s identity conflict in the movie Red, White and Royal Blue (2023) using Erikson’s psychosocial theory, drawing on Butler’s queer theory. Employing a qualitative research approach, this study examines the dialogue, actions, emotions, and interactions that reflect Henry’s identity development. The findings indicate that Henry’s identity conflict is influenced by main factors: family expectation, royal responsibilities, social expectation, and his sexual identity. These factors create persistent psychosocial pressure, making it difficult for him to reconcile his personal identity with expectations inherent in his role as a member of the British royal family. This study also found that Henry expressed this conflict through internal emotional expressions, which were the most dominant. In summary, this study shows that identity conflict develops through the interaction between personal identity and the individual’s environment.
