Abstract

This study investigates the politeness strategies used by Detective Benoit Blanc in Knives Out (2019) and how they reflect masculinity. Employing a qualitative descriptive design within a sociolinguistic framework, the data consist of Blanc’s spoken utterances analyzed using Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory and Connell’s concept of masculinity. The findings reveal that Blanc employs all four politeness strategies: bald on record, negative politeness, positive politeness, and off-record. Bald on record is the most frequent, reflecting investigative discourse demands for clarity and authority. Meanwhile, other strategies demonstrate his ability to maintain cooperation and build relationships without diminishing professional authority. Furthermore, Blanc’s strategies construct masculinity through four characteristics: authority and control, rationality, emotional composure, and empathy. This study suggests that masculinity is represented not only through directness but also through the strategic use of politeness. It contributes to sociolinguistic research on language and identity in film discourse.
