Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of politeness strategies used by female characters in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story (2023) and to analyze how these strategies reflect female power. This research used a qualitative content analysis design. The data were taken from the utterances of Queen Charlotte and other female characters in the series. The data were collected by watching the series, transcribing the dialogues, classifying the utterances based on Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies, and analyzing them according to the context. The findings show that all four politeness strategies are used in the series: bald-on-record (44), positive politeness (19), negative politeness (23), and off-record (15). Bald-on-record is the most frequently used strategy because Queen Charlotte often gives direct commands and shows her authority as a queen. The study concludes that politeness strategies are used not only to maintain communication but also to express female power, leadership, and authority within the royal hierarchy.
