Abstract

This research is motivated by students' low ability to write short stories, characterized by difficulty finding and developing ideas, constructing a coherent plot, developing characters and conflicts, and using language appropriately. Teacher-centered learning also results in students being less active in reading, discussing, and developing ideas. This study aims to determine the effect of the CIRC learning model on short story writing skills; the effect of critical thinking skills on short story writing skills; and the interaction between the CIRC learning model and critical thinking skills in influencing the short story writing skills of fifth grade elementary school students in the Barat District, Magetan Regency, in the 2025/2026 academic year. This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi experimental method and a 2 × 2 factorial design. The study sample consisted of 35 students: 17 fifth-grade students from Banjarejo Elementary School as the experimental class who received learning using the CIRC model and 18 fifth-grade students from Bogorejo Elementary School as the control class who received conventional learning. The critical thinking ability instrument consisted of five essay questions that were declared valid and reliable. Data analysis used a two-way ANOVA with unequal cells after the data met the normality and homogeneity tests. The results of the study showed that: (1) there was an effect of the learning model on short story writing skills; (2) there was an effect of critical thinking skills on short story writing skills; and (3) there was an interaction between the learning model and critical thinking skills on short story writing skills with a significance value of 0.011. The average writing ability of students in the CIRC class was higher than that of the conventional class, while students with high critical thinking skills had better writing skills than students with low critical thinking skills. Thus, the CIRC learning model is effective for use in teaching short story writing by considering the level of students' critical thinking skills.
