Abstract

During junior high school (SMP), adolescents are typically between the ages of 12 and 15. Adolescents at this age begin to expand their social circles beyond their families by building relationships with peers through ongoing social interaction. This study aims to examine the social interactions and friendships of students who are only children at SMP Negeri 3 in Madiun City. The research design used in this study is a qualitative case study approach. The research subjects were eighth-grade students selected through purposive sampling, with the sample chosen based on the considerations of this study. There were five research subjects who were only children: subjects A, R, V, N, and Y. Sampling was conducted to ensure that subjects were not selected based on factors unrelated to the data needs of the study. The data collection technique used was interviews, which were chosen based on the characteristics and type of data required. Based on interviews with students who are only children regarding their social interactions at school, although these students do not have biological siblings at home and have experienced awkwardness and social anxiety, they were able to overcome these challenges through lighthearted communication and banter. Furthermore, students who are only children have been able to build healthy friendships in the school environment despite having varied social characteristics and dynamics. Healthy and active social interactions serve as the primary foundation for only children to create friendships that are mutually supportive, encouraging, and provide a space to confide in one another and offer solutions or advice.
