Abstract

This research aims to analyze the representation and the causes of socio-political conflict behind the song “Wind of Change” by the Scorpions through Ahmadi’s (2021) sociological approach to literature and literary history. Using qualitative research methods, this study examines the song’s lyrics as the primary data source through content analysis techniques, including unitizing, coding, and inferring. The analysis is reinforced through peer debriefing and triangulation using academic sources and historical facts about the Cold War. The research findings indicate that the unitizing process identified various symbols, metaphors, and key expressions that represent military control, ideological tensions, social change, hopes for freedom, and reconciliation between the Eastern and Western Blocs. Through the coding process, the data was classified into four main categories: conflict, social, political, and ideological, with the ideological conflict between communism and capitalism as the most dominant theme. Furthermore, the inferring stage connects these findings to historical events such as the 1989 Moscow Peace Music Festival, the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, and the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, indicating that this song represents both the end of ideological conflict and the birth of a new socio-political order. In conclusion, “Wind of Change” serves not only as a popular song but also as a cultural document that captures the major socio-political transformations at the end of the Cold War and contributes to the field of sociological studies of literature in understanding the relationship between literary works, history, and social reality.
