Abstract

This study aims to explain the effectiveness of using the "show not tell" technique in teaching fiction writing skills to fifth grade students at SDN Durenan 1, Sidorejo District, Magetan Regency, during the 2025/2026 academic year. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach. The subjects of the study are fifth grade students at SDN Durenan 1, their teacher, and their parents, while the object of the study is the students' fiction writing skills. Research instruments include guidelines for observation, interviews, and fiction story analysis. Data collection techniques involve observation, interviews, fiction story analysis, and documentation. Data analysis involves data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing with verification. Data validity is ensured through technique triangulation and source triangulation. The results indicate that teaching fiction writing skills using the "show not tell" technique is effective due to a staged learning process covering examples, story outlining, drafting, and revision which enables students to better understand writing stages and express ideas systematically. Consequently, the students' writing features more coherent plotlines, clearer character and setting descriptions, varied vocabulary, and the ability to convey character emotions through description; it also fosters greater student activity, creativity, and confidence in expressing ideas and developing their imaginations into fiction. Furthermore, the success of this approach is supported by factors such as systematic instruction, teacher guidance, student enthusiasm, vocabulary mastery, the use of media, and the provision of feedback on written work. Conversely, inhibiting factors include limited vocabulary, low writing interest among some students, difficulty developing ideas, varying writing abilities, and time constraints. The resulting student work exhibits a more complete fiction story structure, a more coherent plot, clearer character and setting depictions, and varied vocabulary, making the stories more engaging. This indicates that the " show not tell" technique not only enhances the learning process but also influences the quality of the written work produced by students.
