Abstract
Self-identity formation is one of the essential developmental tasks during adolescence, which is influenced by both internal and external factors. Emotion regulation, as an internal factor, palys an important role in helping individuals manage their emotional responses adaptively, while the intensity of TikTok social media use, as an external factor, has the potential to influence the process of self-identity formation. This study aimed to determine the influence of emotion regulation and the intensity of TikTok social media use on students’ sel-identity formation at SMA Negeri 1 Nawangan. This study employed a quantitative approach using an ex post facto research design. The population consisted of 381 students, with a sample of 195 students selected through stratified random sampling. Data were collected using psychological scales that had met the validity and reliability requirements. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, classical assumption tests, and multiple linier regression analysis with the assistance of SPSS version 26. The findings revealed that emotion regulation had a positive and significant influence on stundents’ self-identity formation, whereas the intensity of TikTok social media use had a negative and significant influence. Simultaneously, both independent variables significantly influenced self-identity formation, with a coefficient of determination (R2) OF 0,485, indicating that 48,5% of the variance in students’ self-identity formation could be explained by the two variables. The findings are expected to serve as a basis for developing guidance and counselling services, provide insights for stundents in managing their emotions and using social media wisely, and serve as a reference for future researchers in conducting related studies.
