Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of students' conceptual understanding and learning participation in Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS), particularly on the ecosystem topic. This problem was attributed to teacher-centered instructional practices that limited students' active involvement in the learning process. The study aimed to analyze the effect of the Project Based Learning (PjBL) model assisted by diorama media on the conceptual understanding and learning participation of fifth-grade students at SDN Klitik 1, Ngawi Regency. This research employed a quantitative approach using a Pre-Experimental Design with a One-Group Pretest–Posttest design. The sample consisted of 19 students selected through a saturated sampling technique. Data were collected using a conceptual understanding test and a learning participation questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using the Shapiro–Wilk normality test and the paired-samples t-test with the assistance of SPSS version 26. The findings indicated that the mean score of students' conceptual understanding increased from 60.00 on the pretest to 76.50 on the posttest. The results of the normality test showed that all data were normally distributed, with significance values greater than 0.05. Furthermore, the paired-samples t-test yielded a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), leading to the rejection of H₀ and acceptance of H₁. These findings indicate that the implementation of the Project Based Learning (PjBL) model assisted by diorama media had a significant positive effect on improving the conceptual understanding and learning participation of fifth-grade students in Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) at SDN Klitik 1, Ngawi Regency
