Abstract

This study investigates: (1) the effect of multiethnic interaction on the understanding of connotative meaning among fifth grade students at public elementary schools in Cluster 1, Kecamatan Berbek, Kabupaten Nganjuk; (2) the effect of sociolinguistic awareness on the understanding of connotative meaning among these students; and (3) the simultaneous effect of multiethnic interaction and sociolinguistic awareness on their understanding of connotative meaning. A quantitative quasi-experimental method was employed in this research. The collected data were analyzed using multiple linear regression techniques. The results of the analysis indicate that: (1) multiethnic interaction significantly influences the understanding of connotative meaning among fifth grade students at public elementary schools in Cluster 1, Kecamatan Berbek, Kabupaten Nganjuk; (2) sociolinguistic awareness significantly influences the understanding of connotative meaning; and (3) there is a significant simultaneous influence of multiethnic interaction and sociolinguistic awareness on the understanding of connotative meaning among these students.
