Abstract

This study is entitled “The Utilization of Podcast Media in Listening Skills Learning for Seventh Grade Students at SMP Negeri 3 Nganjuk.” This research is motivated by the low level of students’ listening skills and the limited use of technology-based learning media that are engaging and suitable for students’ characteristics. Podcast media were chosen because they are audio-based, flexible, easy to access, and relevant to technological developments as well as students’ learning habits. The objectives of this study are: (1) to describe the process of utilizing podcast media in listening skills learning for seventh grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Nganjuk, (2) to identify students’ responses toward the use of podcast media in listening learning, and (3) to identify the obstacles and solutions in the utilization of podcast media in listening skills learning. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research method. The research subjects consisted of a Bahasa Indonesia teacher and seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Nganjuk. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The validity of the data was ensured through source and technique triangulation. The results of the study indicate that the utilization of podcast media in listening skills learning was carried out through planning, implementation, and evaluation stages. Podcast media helped students better understand listening materials due to their engaging presentation, the ability to replay the audio, and their effectiveness in increasing students’ concentration and learning motivation. Students showed positive responses toward the use of podcast media, as reflected in increased activeness, learning interest, and comprehension of spoken texts. The obstacles encountered included limited technological facilities and differences in students’ ability to access the media; however, these obstacles could be addressed through teacher guidance and the provision of alternative learning media. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that podcast media can be effectively utilized as a learning medium for listening skills and provide positive contributions to the learning process and outcomes of Bahasa Indonesia learning for seventh grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Nganjuk.
