Abstract
Juwitaningrum, Paramita Dyah. 2025. The Use of Short Stories to Develop Speaking Skills of Fourth-Grade Students at SD Negeri 2 Ngrencak, Panggul District, Trenggalek Regency. Thesis. Master’s Program in Indonesian Language and Literature Education. Graduate School of Universitas PGRI Madiun (UNIPMA). Supervisor I: Dr. Supri Wahyudi Utomo, M.Pd., Supervisor II: Dr. Dwi Rohman Soleh, S.S., M.Pd. Keywords: short stories, speaking skills, Indonesian language learning, elementary school This study aims to describe the use of short stories in developing the speaking skills of fourthgrade students at SD Negeri 2 Ngrencak, Panggul District, Trenggalek Regency. The background of this research is based on the low level of students’ speaking skills, which are characterized by a lack of confidence, fluency, and pronunciation accuracy in expressing ideas orally. Short stories were selected as a learning medium because they are considered capable of attracting students’ interest and encouraging them to actively participate in speaking activities. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of the study were the teacher and fourth-grade students of SD Negeri 2 Ngrencak. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that the use of short stories in Indonesian language learning can improve students’ speaking skills. This improvement is reflected in the increased activeness of students during storytelling activities, their ability to convey the content of stories using their own words, and their enhanced confidence when speaking in front of the class. The obstacles encountered in the learning process included differences in students’ speaking abilities and limited instructional time. Overall, the use of short stories can serve as an effective alternative in developing elementary school students’ speaking skills. Based on the findings of this study, it can be concluded that the use of short stories and retelling activities in front of the class is effective in fostering students’ confidence to speak publicly and can be applied as an alternative strategy in Indonesian language learning at the elementary school level
