Abstract

This research was prompted by the low reading comprehension ability of fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 1 Sidoharjo in Indonesian language lessons. Initial observations revealed that only 5 out of 13 students were able to comprehend reading texts, struggled to identify important sentences, and had difficulty summarizing story content. This resulted in low daily quiz scores and limited summarization skills. The objective of this classroom action research was to analyze the improvement of reading comprehension abilities among fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 1 Sidoharjo through the application of the Know-Want to Know-Learned (K-W-L) method. This study employed a classroom action research model consisting of four main stages: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The research subjects were the fourth-grade students of SD Negeri 1 Sidoharjo. Data was collected through observation, reading comprehension tests, and field notes. The results of the study showed a significant improvement in students' reading comprehension abilities after the implementation of the K-W-L method. Prior to the intervention, the percentage of students' reading comprehension ability was 57.3%, categorized as "Less Capable." In Cycle I, there was a slight increase to 66.8%, but it remained in the "Less Capable" category. Following improvements and more optimal implementation in Cycle II, students' reading comprehension ability dramatically increased to 80.0%, categorized as "Very Capable." This improvement proves that the K-W-L method is effective in helping students comprehend reading texts, identify important information, and independently summarize story content.
