Keywords: writing, explanatory text, and contextual teaching and learning This research aims to describe and explain (1) improving learning to write explanatory texts using a contextual teaching and learning approach for class V students at SDN Kradinan 01 Dolopo District, Madiun Regency, (2) improving student learning outcomes in learning to write explanatory texts using a contextual teaching approach and learning of fifth grade students at SDN Kradinan 01, Dolopo District, Madiun Regency. This research is classroom action research using two cycles. The results of this research are (1) the implementation of learning to write explanatory texts using a contextual teaching and learning approach for class V students at SDN Kradinan 01 Dolopo District, Madiun Regency, teachers learning to write explanatory texts using or applying a contextual teaching and learning approach in writing explanatory texts, including Teachers provide opportunities for students to describe for themselves natural phenomena and social phenomena that occur in the surrounding environment. The teacher only acts as a facilitator and the rest of the students play a more active role in the teaching and learning process, (2) Student learning outcomes in the implementation of learning to write explanatory texts using a contextual teaching and learning approach for class V students at SDN Kradinan 01 Dolopo District, Madiun Regency, cycle I value The average of students in writing explanatory texts was 66.16 and in the second cycle 85. The data shows an increase from the first cycle, namely 1 student who completed it with a percentage of 16.67, to 5 students with a percentage of 83.33% in cycle II. These results show that the increase from cycle I to cycle II was 60%, so that contextual teaching and learning in writing explanations was successful because students played an active role in the teaching and learning process.
