Abstract

Song lyrics function not just as entertainment but also as a reflection and construction of societal ideology. This study examines the ideologies within Avenged Sevenfold's “A Little Piece of Heaven” using Fairclough's (1995) Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), supported by Martin and White’s Appraisal Theory (2005). Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research assesses three levels: text analysis, discursive practice, and socio-cultural practice. Results reveal that 60.9% of the lyrics promote dominant negative values, mainly in judgment, highlighting themes like obsessive love, abuse of power, and violence. These are expressed monoglossically, indicating the songwriter’s definitive stance. Analysis of the song's creation, distribution, and reception shows that, despite originating within a capitalistic music industry, it acts as resistance to mainstream norms, particularly romantic and heteronormative ideologies. Audience reactions vary significantly: fans interpret it as artistic freedom, whereas non-fans perceive it as moral deviation. Ultimately, this study demonstrates that song lyrics serve as a potent discourse that shapes and perpetuates social ideologies and criticism through language. Key Terms: CDA, Song Lyrics, Ideology, Appraisal Theory
