Abstract

This research examines the representation and identifies the determinations of the phenomenon of consumer society and symbolic consumption in Émile Zola's classic novel, using Jean Baudrillard's The Consumer Society as the main reference. Chronicling the setting of late 19th-century Paris, Zola's narrative features the birth of the department store, which is part of a socio-cultural movement. This research finds that The Ladies' Paradise reveals the changing consumption patterns of society—from purchasing a necessity to a self-image used to display social status and recognition. Using qualitative thematic analysis, this research reveals the symbolic consumption representation influenced by factors such as business innovation strategies, discount events, advertising, and commercial strategies targeting women. Zola's narrative reveals the representation of social classes within Baudrillard's concept. The results indicate that symbolic consumption is a phenomenon of the pursuit of self-identity in the new industrial system, and The Ladies' Paradise represents socio-economic shifts and the implications of consumption patterns and identity in the late 19th century.
