Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to determine whether there is a substantial association between students’ speaking anxiety and speaking performance. 30 tenth-grade students of MAN 4 Kabupaten Madiun took part in this study. The study used a quantitative research method with a correlational research design. The researcher assessed the students’ speaking abilities using Brown’s speaking assessment and studied their speaking anxiety with 1-5 Likert-scale questionnaires. The questionnaires are based on Yaikhong and Usaha’s article A Measure of EFL Public Speaking Class Anxiety: Scale Development, Preliminary Validation, and Reliability (2012). The data were analyzed with SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) version 25, focusing on normality and correlational tests. The analysis result indicates that there is no significant correlation between the speaking anxiety and speaking performance (Sig 2-tailed = 0.463). H0 is accepted. There is probably a reason why the two variables are not correlated; it is because of low motivation and lack of confidence.
