Abstract
ABSTRACT Annisa Nabila Putri. 2026. The Relationship between Parents' Perceptions of Child Growth and Development and the Independence of Children Aged 5–6 Years. Undergraduate Thesis. Early Childhood Teacher Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas PGRI Madiun. Supervisors: (I) Dr. Fida Chasanatun, M.Pd.; (II) Dian Ratnaningtyas Afifah, M.Psi., Psikolog. Independence is an important developmental aspect for children aged 5–6 years, as it equips them for daily life and prepares them to enter the next level of education. However, some children's independence is still not developing optimally, which is presumed to be related, among other factors, to parents' perceptions of child growth and development. This study aimed to determine the relationship between parents' perceptions of child growth and development and the independence of children aged 5–6 years. The study used a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The population consisted of parents of children aged 5–6 years at 13 public kindergartens in Sawahan District, Madiun Regency, with 157 respondents determined using Slovin's formula and simple random sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using validity, reliability, and normality tests; because the data were not normally distributed, hypothesis testing used the Spearman rank correlation test. The results showed that both parents' perceptions of child growth and development and the children's level of independence were in the high category. However, the Spearman rank correlation test showed no significant relationship between the two, so H0 was accepted and H1 was rejected. This finding indicates that children's independence is influenced more by other factors, such as consistent parenting practices, real opportunities given to children, and individual characteristics of the child, than by parents' perceptions alone. The results are expected to serve as a consideration for parents and educators in optimizing the independence of early childhood. Keywords: perception, growth and development, independence
