Abstract

Eucalyptus plants (Melaleuca leucadendra Linn.) belong to the Myrtaceae family. Eucalyptus oil is usually produced from traditional (conventional) distillation whose extraction process requires a considerable amount of time and energy. Not only that, conventional distillation requires quite a lot of chemical solvents at an expensive price. So that in this study, the development of the conventional method, namely the microwave hydrodiffusion gravity (MHG) method which does not require solvents, is carried out. The purpose of this study is to determine the most optimal material form for extraction using the MHG method. The material used in this study is eucalyptus leaves in the condition of the material without drying and with drying. The variable leaf shape used is chopped leaves, half leaves, and whole leaves. From the results of the study, it was obtained that the optimal form of material for eucalyptus oil extraction using the MHG method was chopping. Dry materials in the form of chopped leaves produce a yield of 2.85%. In the material without drying in the form of chopped leaves, it produces a yield of 2.80%.
