Abstract
Mathematics is an important science that everyone needs to master. One way to improve students' mathematical abilities is by providing HOTs (Higher Order Thinking Skills) questions. The aim of this research is to determine students' difficulties in solving HOTs questions on two-variable linear equation systems based on polya theory. This research uses a qualitative descriptive research type. This research was conducted at SMPN 1 Kare with the research subjects being class VIII A students in the 2023/2024 academic year in the even semester. The instruments used are written tests and interviews. Data collection techniques use written tests and interviews. The test is in the form of a description/essay with 2 questions. Written tests are used to obtain data about students' difficulties in solving problems, while interviews are used to deepen knowledge about students' levels of difficulty. The subjects of this research were 3 students who were categorized as high, medium and low who experienced difficulty in solving HOTs questions. The data analysis used is qualitative data analysis by referring to the Miles and Huberman concept, namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that high category subjects experienced difficulties in principles and solving verbal problems; category subjects are experiencing difficulties in concepts and principles; and low category subjects have difficulty in concepts, solving verbal problems, and principles. These findings emphasize the importance of special learning strategies to overcome students' difficulties in solving HOTs questions.
