Abstract

Genre is a type of communication that relates to language, social context, and conveys messages for specific purposes in the form of texts, both written and spoken. Meanwhile, Genre analysis is an approach to studying various genres in communication. Rhetoric is the technique of using language effectively persuasively to change or manipulate the thoughts and actions of an audience. Rhetorical analysis is a way to investigate the use of rhetorical principles that show the interaction between text, author, and audience. The purpose of this study is to find out the rhetorical patterns used by ELT Students in writing their thesis abstract. The method used in this study is a qualitative approach with content/document analysis method. The data sources in this study are 20 ELT Student thesis abstract documents. The results of this study show that the move pattern that has the highest frequency is M2 (Purpose) which is 100%, M3 (Method) and M4 (Product) which is 95%. In addition, the results of this study also show that half of the data source documents begin their abstract paragraphs with the purpose of the research or move pattern M2 (Purpose). The conclusion of this study is that there is still a lack of use of M1 (Introduction) and M5 (Conclusion) in writing thesis abstracts by ELT Students, this may be due to a lack of understanding of the writing rhetoric for the abstract section.
