Abstract

One of the anime that tells a story in a wild and free manner, yet is wrapped in a very well-crafted narrative with distinctive characteristics, is the anime Monster, adapted from the manga by Naoki Urasawa. Extreme ideologies such as nihilism are also depicted in the nature of the main character in the manga Monster by Naoki Urasawa. Nihilism itself is the belief that all values are meaningless. More specifically, it is the notion that there are no inherent meanings or values in life that apply to all humans. Johan Liebert, the main character in the anime and manga Monster by Naoki Urasawa, is a representation of nihilism in its most extreme and destructive form. Nihilism, in a philosophical context, is often interpreted as the belief that life has no meaning, purpose, or intrinsic value. Johan embodies this view in various deeply disturbing ways. He adopts a nihilistic philosophy due to a series of traumatic experiences and psychological manipulation from his childhood. Early trauma, identity manipulation, violence at Kinderheim 511, and the influence of Franz Bonaparta all contribute to Johan's belief that life holds no intrinsic value. The experiences of loss, betrayal, and further manipulation reinforce his nihilistic outlook, making Johan one of the most complex and terrifying characters in Monster. Keywords: nihilism, monster, naoki urasawa, johan
