Abstract

The Pisu'o tradition is one of the cultural heritages of the Buton community that continues to be preserved as a rite of passage marking the transition of girls from childhood (kabua-bua) to adulthood (kalambe). This tradition serves not only as a customary ceremony but also embodies various values and symbolic meanings that guide the lives of the community. However, as society continues to develop, public understanding, particularly among the younger generation, of the values and symbolic meanings embedded in the Pisu'o tradition has gradually declined, making further study necessary. This study aims to: (1) describe the implementation of the Pisu'o tradition in Batuatas Liwu Village, Batuatas District, South Buton Regency; (2) explore and analyze the values contained in each stage of the Pisu'o tradition; and (3) explain the symbolic meanings of the Pisu'o tradition within the cultural context of the community of Batuatas Liwu Village, Batuatas District, South Buton Regency. This study employed a qualitative approach using an ethnographic method. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The validity of the data was ensured through source triangulation and technique triangulation. Data were analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model, which consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing or verification. The findings reveal that: (1) the Pisu'o tradition continues to be preserved through three main stages, namely preparation, implementation, and closing, in accordance with customary regulations; (2) the tradition embodies moral, social, religious, cultural educational, women's character-building, and respect for customary values; and (3) each symbol and ceremonial object, including the suo room, ndamu, pebaho, pokunde, and pomantomu, carries philosophical meanings representing guidance toward a future life partner, purity, maturity, responsibility, togetherness, and hope for a better future. Therefore, the Pisu'o tradition functions not only as a customary ceremony but also as a medium for transmitting cultural values and strengthening the cultural identity of the people of Batuatas Liwu Village.
