Abstract
Didin Luskha Y.A. 2026. Integration of Local Wisdom from Trenggalek Folklore in Learning to Read Narrative Texts for Fourth-Grade Students of SD Negeri 1 Kendalrejo, Trenggalek Regency. Thesis. Master’s Program in Indonesian Language and Literature Education. Graduate School, Universitas PGRI Madiun (UNIPMA). Supervisor I: Dr. Dwi Setiyadi, M.M, Supervisor II: Dr. Kodrat Eko Putro Setiawan, M.Pd. Keywords: Integration, Local Wisdom, Folklore, Narrative Texts, Reading Skills, Elementary School. This research is motivated by the low reading comprehension skills of fourth-grade students regarding narrative texts, caused by reading materials that are less contextual and unfamiliar to students’ daily lives. Reading instruction tends to use generic texts that do not incorporate local wisdom, making it difficult for students to deeply understand the content and leading to a loss of reading interest. In fact, local wisdom in the form of Trenggalek folklore is rich in cultural values and moral messages that hold great potential as learning resources. The objectives of this study are to describe the process of integrating Trenggalek folklore into narrative text reading instruction and to analyze its impact on improving students’ reading comprehension skills. This study employs a qualitative approach with a classroom action research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles. The subjects were fourth-grade students of SD Negeri 1 Kendalrejo. Data were collected through observation, interviews, reading comprehension tests, and documentation. Data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative techniques with the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The findings indicate that the integration of Trenggalek folklore significantly improves students’ narrative text reading skills. Students show improvement in identifying main ideas, recognizing intrinsic story elements (characters, settings, plot), and retelling the content in their own words. Moreover, students demonstrate high enthusiasm and engagement because the stories presented are relevant to their cultural environment, facilitating the connection between texts and real-life experiences. The use of local folklore also strengthens students’ character through the internalization of the moral values embedded in the stories. In conclusion, the integration of local wisdom from Trenggalek folklore is effective in improving narrative text reading skills and fostering a love for local culture among fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 1 Kendalrejo.
