Abstract

This study analyzes prohibition speech acts in the Migration Act 1958 of Australia by focusing on their syntactic structures and illocutionary forces. The objectives are to identify the syntactic structures used to express prohibition and to examine the illocutionary forces conveyed in Australian migration law. This research employed a descriptive qualitative design with a pragmatic approach. The data were collected through document analysis of the Migration Act 1958 (Compilation No. 169, Volume 2, Parts 2–5). The analysis applied Allan’s theory of syntactic structures, Austin’s speech act theory, and Searle’s classification of illocutionary acts. The findings reveal 42 prohibition speech acts. All data are realized through declarative sentences, while imperative and interrogative forms are absent. The prohibitions are mainly marked by must not, shall not, may not, and cannot. Furthermore, the illocutionary forces are classified into two categories: forbidding (33 data) and threatening (9 data). The study concludes that prohibition speech acts in Australian migration law function to regulate behavior, express legal authority, and ensure compliance through both restriction and legal sanctions.
