Abstract

Key Terms: complimenting speech acts, expressive speech acts, compliment topics, syntactic structures, America’s Got Talent, Britain’s Got Talent Compliments are expressive speech acts used to express admiration, appreciation, and positive evaluation toward others. In talent shows, judges frequently use compliments to evaluate contestants’ performances and personal qualities. This study aims to identify the compliment topics used by judges in America’s Got Talent (AGT) and Britain’s Got Talent (BGT) and to analyze the syntactic struc-tures employed in expressing those compliments. This study employed a descrip-tive qualitative design with content analysis. The data consisted of judges’ com-plimenting utterances collected from 16 audition and performance videos (eight AGT and eight BGT videos) selected through purposive sampling from the offi-cial YouTube channels. The data were analyzed using Holmes’ (1986) classifica-tion of compliment topics and Manes & Wolfson’s (1981) syntactic patterns of compliments. The findings revealed 215 complimenting utterances. Ability was the most dominant compliment topic with 155 occurrences (72.1%), followed by character with 55 occurrences (25.6%) and appearance with five occurrences (2.3%), while no possession-related compliments were found. Six of the nine syn-tactic patterns proposed by Manes & Wolfson (1981) were identified, with Pattern 3 (PRO + BE + ADJ/ADJ NP) being the most frequent (28.8%). Additionally, 90 utterances (41.7%) were categorized as Other Structures, indicating greater syn-tactic variation in spontaneous interactions. Overall, both AGT and BGT predom-inantly focused on contestants’ abilities and employed direct evaluative structures, although BGT demonstrated slightly greater syntactic variation than AGT.
